Here is a quick update on how my 3 Plans to Eliminate the Musty Smell in My Front Load Washer are progressing. Today I was down to one child with the other being at Grammy’s for a sleepover. Knowing that I could distract him with a free cookie long enough to focus in the laundry and cleaning section of Harris Teeter, off I went to stock up on my smelly washer combat supplies.
Notes from my shopping trip:
1. Powdered Detergent – This is harder to find than I thought. There were only a few boxes on the shelf compared to rows and rows of liquid detergent. Most, if not all, were scented. I have an eczema prone toddler, so we stay away from scented detergent. I really wanted ALL Free and Clear in powder form since I use the liquid form of it now and I know it doesn’t make anyone in the house itchy, but they didn’t have it at Teeter. Apparently it does exist though, so I will hunt it down. I am also toying with another idea here… laundry balls. Yes, I said laundry balls. I have seen them before on QVC (don’t judge) and they replace laundry detergent by using “chemical-free bioceramics… to change the alkalinity of the water “. Now doesn’t that sound magical and amazing? Actually, I have no idea what it means, but I do know that it means no more detergent. They are natural too and work for up to 1100 loads. So lets see, based on the number of loads of laundry I do per day…carry the 1…that should last me at least a few weeks. Seriously, they have great reviews on the Q, so I am considering…
2. Oxiclean – This stuff comes in a bunch of formats – gel stain stick, drop in packets, tub of powder etc. I got the tub of powder — what they call the Versatile Stain Remover. Doesn’t it sound laid back and spontaneous? I love that in a cleaner. The container says it has over 101 uses! I was pretty sure there were at least 26 or 27 uses that my house needed house right now, so I visited the Oxiclean website to figure out what they were. I still have not located a 101 list. Don’t tempt me with potential cleaning and then not deliver! Whatever Oxi. What I did find on their site was a chart comparing my purchase to other Oxiclean products only to learn that mine does not have the ‘Stain Grabbing Nubs’ that the Gel Stick has! Curse you Gel Stick.
3. Carbona Washing Machine Cleaner – IMPULSE BUY! Okay, this was not on my list, but I had to have it! A product made just for my problem? Someone understands me! There are others out their with washer B.O. like me! The front of the box said ‘cleans — freshens — maintains’. ‘Maintains’ is the one that hooked me! What a wonderful word Maybe this will last for more than an hour unlike my current clean washer cycle efforts. Unfortunately you do have to use the stuff to manually clean the seal and the drawer first, so it isn’t just a 1 step thing. I was hoping for something a la Vanish drop-ins or Glade plug-ins (or some sort of ‘-ins’) when I saw the box, but I will have to use some elbow grease. It is supposed to leave ‘your machine smelling fresh and clean’ for a month. Awesome! One of my posters mentioned that she uses a similar product made by Tide, so I guess there are a few out there.
I already have a ton of white vinegar, so I am all set there.
This morning, the funk was in full effect when I went to put in a load of whites, so the timing is perfect to start using my bag of tricks (absent stain-grabbing nubs notwithstanding) . I will follow up on how things go with this minor annoyance. I’ll try everything and see how the results do over time, so I will revisit this topic in about a month. Wish me luck.
